DIRECTV DVR and NFL Sunday Ticket
Fall is my favorite time of year. No not because of the cooler weather and the leaves on the ground, but because it is now football season.
Football season is great because after two months of virtually nothing on television as far as sports, suddenly you are drenched with dozens of games every weekend. Sure I can take in a baseball game in person, but sitting and watching it on television puts a man to sleep. At least the Beijing Olympics provided some sports activity this year.
I love both the college and the NFL games for different factors. The excitement involved in the college game isn’t like anything else. Every Saturday, thousands of screaming fans fill up college stadiums in an effort to help the home team to victory. With the increase of network TV money, there are often great matchups on every Thursday and Saturday night as well. While I don’t really like the Bowl Championship Series system that is in place in the college game, one benefit to the arrangement is that every regular season matchup really matters. A college team could get away with one loss during the year, but if they want a shot at the BCS championship, then they can’t afford to lose twice.
The NFL is a different beast, but just as good in my opinion. Again the passion is amazing, especially in the great NFL cities like Boston, Oakland, Chicago, and Miami. What makes the NFL interesting for many fans is the expansion of fantasy football. Sure some guys go a little crazy, in that they spend all of their free time evaluating their players and proposing ridiculous trades to the other fantasy players in the league. But if you get in with the right set of guys and gals, then fantasy football makes all of the games much more interesting.
This fall I had to re-evaluate my cable TV, as Cox TV continued to disappoint me as far at their service and pricing. Luckily for me, I had a couple of choices, as U Verse from AT&T service is now in my area, as well as satellite TV. After looking into my choices, I discovered there are great satellite TV deals going on currently. So then it became the old DISH Network vs Direct TV debate Being the huge fan that I am, I just wouldn’t pass up the NFL Ticket programming package that they offer. On top of that, they offer new college football packages, including the ESPN Gameplan. Overall, there is just more for your money when comparing Direct TV against Comcast. Plus, you just can’t beat the DIRECTV DVR.
My spouse may not like that choice, but at least she will know where to find me, right in front of the TV this fall!

Marine Diesel Engine Maintenance
In a traditional marine diesel engine its power is produced by hot compressed air igniting fuel which has been sprayed into the cylinder head under very high pressure. A marine diesel engine does not have a carburetor to mix fuel or air spark plugs to ignite the mixture. Instead, the pistons are used to compress the air to 3000 kPa, which causes it to become extremely hot and the fuel is ignited as soon as it is injected into the cylinder.
Some marine diesel engines are fitted with a glow plug in the pre-combustion chamber of each cylinder or a heater plug in the inlet manifold. These can provide additional heat to the combustion air during the starting process.
Diesel marine engines are slower revving and heavier than gasoline engines but they are also more reliable because they do not have to count on external carburetion or that electrical spark for ignition.
Many newer engines employ an electronic fuel injection system where fuel and air are mixed more thoroughly in the pre-combustion chamber before entering the cylinder. This system maximizes power and fuel economy and is a less polluting option.
Every boater should have at least a basic understanding of how their marine engine works so let’s start by explaining the mechanical cycles.
Most reciprocating piston internal combustion engines work on one of two mechanical cyclesóeither the four-stroke cycle or the two-stroke cycle. These cycles list, in the correct order, the mechanical actions by which the fuel and air gain access to the engine cylinder, the gas pressure – due to combustion – is converted into power and, lastly, the burnt gas is expelled from the engine cylinder.
A Basic Four-Stroke Diesel Engine
As the name suggests it is obvious there are four strokes in one complete engine cycle. A stroke is the movement of the piston through the full length of the cylinder and, since one such movement causes the crankshaft to rotate half a turn, it follows that there are two crankshaft revolutions in one complete engine cycle.
The four strokes in the order they occur are:
1. Inlet stroke. With the inlet valve open and the exhaust valve closed, the piston moves from top dead center (TDC) to bottom dead center (BDC), creating a low-pressure area in the cylinder. Clean, filtered air rushes through the opened inlet valve to relieve this low-pressure area, and the cylinder is filled with air.
2. Compression stroke. With both valves closed, the piston moves from BDC to TDC, compressing the air. During the course of this stroke the air becomes heated to a temperature high enough to ignite the fuel.
3. Power stroke. At approximately TDC, the fuel is sprayed or injected, into the hot compressed air, where it ignites, burns and expands. Both valves remain closed, and the pressure on the piston crown forces it down the cylinder from TDC to BDC.
4. Exhaust stroke. At approximately BDC the exhaust valve opens and the piston starts to move from BDC to TDC, driving the burnt gas out of the cylinder through the exhaust valve which is open.
Two-Stroke Diesel Engines
The two-stroke engine uses two piston strokes to complete one power stroke and, therefore, it fires twice as often as a four-stroke engine. A two-stroke engine is smaller and simpler with fewer moving parts. A two-stroke engine has the potential to produce twice as much power as a four-stroke engine of the same size, however, because of the extra fitting required in a two-stroke diesel engine, for example blowers and governors, they become more expensive to produce. There has been a shift towards four stroke diesel engines which have become more efficient and smaller.
Protect Your Marine Diesel Engine
Avoid idling your marine engine for longer than ten minutes in a no-load state. The engine is often idled to charge the batteries or cool the refrigeration but if done repeatedly it will glaze the bores of the engine and cause premature engine failure. When the vessel is in a berth the engine can be put in gear to create load at idle.
Every boat owner should have some knowledge of basic marine diesel engine maintenance to keep themselves and their families safe while boating.
Flying High WIth The London Eye
London, the capital city of England and the United Kingdom, has numerous tourist attractions, many of which are amongst the most popular in the country. For generations London has been a popular vacation destination and much of this interest is due to the immensity of the historical buildings and the unique culture. The London Eye is often referred to as the Millennium Wheel as it was built in 1999 to commemorate the arrival of the new millennium. In 1895, in Earl’s Court, was the Great Wheel of London, a giant Ferris Wheel which could carry around 1,600 people at a time. Unfortunately it was demolished in 1907 but today London has a replacement in the London Eye. Although it is not the largest Ferris wheel in the world it can legitimately claim to be the worlds largest cantilever observation tower!
Although the London Eye cannot carry as many people as the Great Wheel of London could it can manage to carry 25 people in each of its 32 capsules. Usually you must remain seated when on a Ferris wheel but on the London Eye you can get up and walk around during the 30 minute revolution.
With as many as three and a half million people “flying” on the London Eye a year it is now one of the most popular attractions in London. Most people take a flight on the London Eye just to take in the most fantastic views of London. Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Hampton Court Palace and St Paul’s are just a few of the many London landmarks you will see on your trip. During your flight you will be able to enjoy one of the finest views of the Houses of Parliament possible.
Although there are many ways to enjoy the London Eye some choose to make a marriage proposal while at the top and it is also possible to purchase a wedding package. These earlier claimants were, therefore, subsequently described as such and can not, realistically, claim to be the first.

Putman created the hotel in what has become known as an “America meets Europe” fashion. Steven Rubell set out to promote his hotel and to do this he needed to make his hotel stand out from all others, especially those belonging to the large hotel chains. He described other hotels as “department store” hotels and his own as a “boutique hotel” to show the distinctive difference – thus the phrase entered the English language for the first time.

42 The Calls (hotel) in Leeds claims to be one of the first to appear in the UK. The Calls was a hotel built in the carcass of an old corn mill and used that as the overall theme. One of the great things about modern cable and satellite TV is the explosion of sports programming now available to customers across the country. While 25 years ago you would see a couple of college football games on Saturday and a few on Sunday, today you can literally pick from two dozen or more games every weekend. The motto today is “Content is King” and as the saying goes the sports networks want to deliver as much sports content as possible to the customer so they can sell more advertising. Quite a few brand new all-sports networks have sprung up over the past couple of years. Included among these are Altitude Sports, which carries Nuggets from Denver and Colorado Avalanche matches, and also the Big 10 network and the mtn, the network of the Mountain West conference.
While these new channels are great for fans in lots of areas, disputes between the providers of content and cable networks that deliver the content have resulted in trouble at times to the customer. For example, the Big Ten Network began broadcasting in 2007, but they were unable to strike a deal with cable TV provider Time Warner. Subscribers of Time Warner in Wisconsin were not able to watch some of the local teams play because of the carraige dispute. Fortunately, the parties came to an agreement before the fall football season, so subscribers could stay with Time Warner instead of having to switch over to one of the satellite television companies such as DISH Network or DirecTV.
